Styles control how your dictation is capitalized and punctuated in different kinds of apps. You might want full sentences in email but lowercase texts with no periods to friends. Styles only change capitalization, punctuation and spacing. They never change your words.

Choosing a style

  1. Click your workspace name in the bottom-left corner, then select Settings.
  2. Open Voice typing and scroll to Styles.
  3. Pick a style for each kind of app.
Granola recognizes web apps by their address, so Gmail in Chrome counts as email and Slack in a browser counts as work messages. Each row starts on Automatic, where Granola picks punctuation to suit what you said. When you choose a style, an example under the row shows how it looks.

The styles

  • Formal: Capital letters and full punctuation. “Thanks for the update. Let me know what you think.”
  • Casual: Capital letters, lighter punctuation and no period at the end of short messages. “Thanks for the update, let me know what you think”
  • Very casual: All lowercase, with no periods. “are we still on for dinner? 7 works for me”
  • Excited: Exclamation marks for upbeat sentences. “Thanks for the update! Let me know what you think!”
Questions keep their question marks in every style. Very casual still keeps the original case of technical terms, links and code.

When styles don’t apply

  • Styles need screen context to know which app you’re in. If it’s off, the Styles rows are greyed out.
  • Code editors and terminals keep their own formatting, so technical text isn’t changed.
