# Troubleshooting dictation

> Fix dictation when your shortcut does nothing, text doesn't paste, or the pill shows an error.

When something goes wrong, the pill at the bottom of your screen tells you what happened. Find the problem below.

# Nothing happens when I press the shortcut

1. Check **Enable dictation** is on in **Settings > Voice typing**. If the page asks for Accessibility permission, follow the prompt and allow Granola.
2. If Granola is already allowed, open **System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility**, turn Granola off and on again, then try again.
3. Check the shortcut shown next to **Shortcut** is the one you're pressing.
4. Make sure Granola is open. Dictation stops working if you quit Granola.

While **fn** is your shortcut, Granola turns off the macOS action for the 🌐 key, like showing emoji, so the two don't clash. It puts your setting back when you turn dictation off or change your shortcut.

# My text didn't paste

If Granola can't paste into the app you're in, it copies your text instead and the pill tells you. Click into the text field and press **Cmd+V**.

This usually happens when no text field was selected when you finished speaking. Click into the field first, and keep it selected until your text appears.

If Granola couldn't paste or copy your text, copy it from [History](https://docs.granola.ai/help-center/voice-typing/dictation-history-and-privacy.md#history).

# Microphone problems

* **Granola can't use your microphone**: click the pill to open macOS microphone settings, then allow Granola.
* **No microphone is found**: connect one, or pick one under **Microphone** in **Settings > Voice typing**.
* **Another app is using your microphone**: close that app, or pick a different microphone.
* **Your microphone disconnects mid-dictation**: Granola pastes what it heard before then. Reconnect it and try again.
* **Granola didn't hear any words**: check the right microphone is selected and try again.

# Connection problems

Dictation needs an internet connection. If you're offline or the connection drops, reconnect and try again. If Granola kept your audio, you can [retry the dictation](https://docs.granola.ai/help-center/voice-typing/dictation-history-and-privacy.md#retrying-a-failed-dictation) without saying it again. See also [Network troubleshooting](https://docs.granola.ai/help-center/troubleshooting/network-troubleshooting.md).

If dictation won't start at all, try again. If it keeps happening, quit and reopen Granola.

# Words are wrong or misspelled

* Use a built-in or wired microphone. Bluetooth microphones are less reliable.
* Check **Language** in **Settings > Voice typing** matches the language you speak, or choose **Auto-detect**.
* Add names and terms to your [dictionary](https://docs.granola.ai/help-center/voice-typing/spelling-names-and-terms.md#dictionary).
* Turn on [screen context](https://docs.granola.ai/help-center/voice-typing/spelling-names-and-terms.md#screen-context) so Granola can see names in the app you're using.

# Formatting isn't what I expected

* To change capitalization and punctuation in each kind of app, see [Dictation styles](https://docs.granola.ai/help-center/voice-typing/dictation-styles.md).
* If styles are greyed out, turn on **Screen context**.
